Dendritic herpetic ulcer

Typical dendritic figure in herpes simplex virus (HSV) keratitis. It´s characteristic morphology stained with fluorescein dye is presented very well: an irregular thin line with fine branching and terminal buttons. The epithelium of the cornea is exclusively involved in this superficial HSV cornealinfection. The corneal sensitivity is reduced. The treatment consists of topical antiviral agents as trifluridine, acyclovir or vidarabine. Whether debridement in combination with antiviral therapy is more beneficial than antiviral chemotherapy alone appears likely but remains inconclusive.
