Asteroid hyalosis

Vitreous body showing multiple spherical, brilliant reflecting opacities. Because asteroid bodies (calcium soaps aggregate) are tightly adhered to vitreous collagen fibrils they are less mobile as opacities related to the synchisis scintillans, which tend to sedimentary on the bottom of the vitreous body. The composition and pathogenesis of asteroid hyalosis is not completely understood, but recently is found an element similarity of asteroid bodies with hydroxyapatite. Electron spectroscopic imaging revealed a homogeneous distribution of calcium, phosphorus, and oxygen.
