Cystoid maculopathy

Severe cystoid macular edema (CME) in a patient with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 after 17 years of evolution. Stereopicture shows "cystic-like" spaces filled with extracellular fluid accumulates in the outer plexiform layer (Henle´s fiber layer) of the retina. The formation of CME is due to hyperpermeability of retinal blood vessels - with breakdown of the blood retinal barrier - surrounding the macula. The term CME (´Zystoides Makulaödem´) was introduced by the German ophthalmologist Alfred Bangerter in 1945. Causes of CME other than DM are i.e. uveitis, central retinal vein occlusion, hypertensive retinopathy or it occurs following intraocular surgery. (from: T. Riedel. Univ. Erlangen-Nürnberg)

Myopic degeneration of the central fundus

Myopic degeneration of the central fundus include the peripapillary as well as the macular region. They are seen as areas of widespread chorioretinal atrophy. These well circumscribed areas are of variable size, sometimes involving the whole posterior pole. They are centred on the macula or on the papilla, often in association with a posterior or peripapillary staphyloma. Minor alterations include patches of retinal pigment epithelium atrophy and splits in Bruch´s membrane (‚lacquer´ cracks). Chorioretinal neovascularization followed by disciform degeneration (‚Fuchs´scher Fleck) may also occur. (From: A. Jünemann, Univ. Erlangen-Nürnberg).
